The Australian Science Policy Fellowship Program is an initiative of the Office of the Chief Scientist. The Fellowship program provides an opportunity for early-to-mid career researchers to work in the Australian Public Service. Placements are for one year, and span the breadth of government activities - exposing Fellows to the diverse range of policy functions that government undertakes.
Host departments gain access to highly valued knowledge and analytical expertise, to help them address some of today’s most pressing challenges. The Fellows bring a highly valued skillset, including their transferable science and research skills and fresh perspectives.
Since its inception in 2018, the Fellowship program has been successful at strengthening the science-policy interface and bringing science and technology expertise into public policy processes. The vast majority of Fellows have moved into ongoing positions within the APS after completing the Fellowship Program.
To be eligible for the Program, the applicant must be an Australian citizen, hold a STEM PhD, be no more than 15 years post PhD completion, and be prepared to relocate to Canberra for the duration of the 12 month Program.
Applications for the 2022-23 cohort are open from 1 March to 21 March, 2022. Visit Australia’s Chief Scientist’s website for all the details on how to apply: www.chiefscientist.gov.au/australian-science-policy-fellowship-program
