Employment scams are on the rise and are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Unfortunately, scammers can post legitimate looking job adverts which sometimes can include posing under the details of a legitimate looking company.
Don’t trust a job ad is real just because it appears on a trusted platform or website – scammers post fake ads too. Whilst the UWA Careers and Employability team do their best to screen these out from the UWA Jobs Board and UniHub, some can still fall through. If you come across a scammer on the UWA Jobs Board, report it to careerscentre@uwa.edu.au.
It is important for students applying to jobs through the UWA UniHub Jobs Board (and any other job seeking platform) to be alert to scams.
Stop and check any job that requires you to pay money to make money, or requests personal information and ID documents at the outset of the application process or via email/phone.
Some important things to be aware of that should raise alarm bells:
- Legitimate employers will NOT ask you to share personal documents or information with them at the application stage or through email/over the phone (or with someone you’ve only ever met online). If a job advert is asking for personal details such as your Tax File Number, physical address, date of birth, Medicare number, Passport, Drivers Licence, bank details etc, then this should raise alarm bells.
- Never transfer money to anyone at any point of the job application process. No legitimate employer will request a money transfer.
- If you are being pressured to act quickly, this should raise alarm bells. A legitimate offer won’t require you to make a fast decision. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If you come across any of the above on UniHub or the UWA Jobs Board, report it to careerscentre@uwa.edu.au
